Caught in a D-day, in one place, they are part of bigger picture of life and death. Although there aren't personal nor individual stories related to the victims of the RTS, this motion picture is, nevertheless, one of the kind homage to them.

The lives of the doctors, patients and workers are portrayed in a tragicomical manner and they serve as a metaphore of a life "lived in freedom on a free teritory". While the terror of occupation, death and desolation are are raging, outside, respect, mutual understanding and care prevails in this absurd oasis of peace, on this "ship of lunatics".

 

When stowaways board the ship (escapees from the occupational powers) finding a secure refuge from internment, the story about Petar Kocic becomes a simbolic story about good and evil, like the story of daring David and heartless Goliath. This television film opens another, more intimate theme about human envy that comes from the lack of true artistic talent. The pathological hatred of those who lack talent but have power and their need to persecute and take revenge on the free-spirited and talented is portrayed in this movie in a intriguing and tragic manner, through successive scenes of human suffering, missery and moral decline.

Even the ruler of the destinies of the inhabitants of the mental institution, the deputy of the military guvernman of Belgrade, Kosta Herman is aware that Petar Kocic has escaped him with the greatness of his talent which he will never be able to understand and let alone achieve.

Their everyday bickering gives an illusory impression of mutual dislike and disinterest, but also of joy for being doomed to spend time together. Srna is the daughter of Strain, the most powerful man in the village. She is promised to Ivan, the son of a local park ranger Tadija. In return, Tadija allows Strain to poach and illegally lodge. Even though Srna and Ivan are attracted to each other, they do not wish to marry out of interest, as their fathers are keen to arrange. Suddenly, a former park ranger, Petar, returns to the village. He spent seven years in prison for killing Strain's eldest son. Petar came to find Andja, a woman he loved while living in the village. Through the perspective of present day complexity and dreariness, four women are fighting for their stands, integrity, dignity and right to make their own decision when it comes to answering the question: “Give birth or extinguish a life?” ]]>  

The film is comprised of three related stories: in the first one ("The Waiting Room"), Vanja and Dara, two middle-aged women of different social backgrounds, meet at the waiting room of a clinic as they wait to have an abortion. This unexpected encounter will raise a host of personal questions and make them rethink their decision. In the second story ("The Road"), set in a rural area of Serbia, a mother is taking her daughter along a road to see a doctor who lives alone in a train carriage and illegally performs abortions. During this journey, we see a confrontation of traditional views against pregnancy outside of wedlock and of juvenile wish to give birth to a new life out of love. The third story ("Water") shows Nada, a young woman in her late twenties who is in a prison cell, recalling the tragic events that forced her to kill her husband. At the clinic where she is taken in a police van to have an abortion, she encounters someone she did not expect to see there.

From dawn to dusk and then to a new dawn, during 24 hours, the characters of this film will encounter their respective fates. The storyline revolves around a successful businessman from abroad, Hranislav, who comes to visit his teenage sweetheart, Stanislava. Their encounter is arranged by a young marriage couple and it will reveal all the beauty and tragedy of a life full of futile hopes and expectations, but also of unknown forces that shape it. At the same time, the screenwriter, Goran Petrovic, follows the fates of other prominent residents of a building that is a sort of a "Tower of Babel": the old Bozdar Gostiljac, the young and ambitious Jakov and the warrant officer Andrija Gavrovic. While some scores are settled and lines drawn, at the same time new relationships are formed, new loves and hopes are born. An encounter with an angel will change all of them. Nothing will ever be the same.
